ABSTRACT

This paper stories the creation of the Wāhkōhtowin teacher preparation model on Treaty 6 territory in Saskatchewan, Canada. The model was created out of an educational partnership that responded to the teachings of Nēhiyaw (Cree) Indigenous Elders. We describe the theoretical framework of this Professional Development School (PDS) teacher preparation model that is designed to: decolonize teacher preparation in order to foster student learning and engagement;develop Nēhiyaw teacher identity and proficiency;and support reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. The foundational constructs of the Wāhkōhtowin model of teacher preparation include: relationality, ceremony, language, and child-centredness. The spirit of Wāhkōhtowin teacher preparation is premised on three intents. Firstly, teacher candidates are encouraged to be free to be themselves and share the gifts they bring to the school setting (tipéyimisowin). Secondly, they are encouraged to -come home' to traditional teachings as they engage in cultural learning and identity formation (kīwēwin). Thirdly, their pedagogical growth and development as teachers is fostered with the focus on relational pedagogies, inclusiveness, and community (mamáwi kiskinomāsowin). We complete our paper by discussing the implementation of the Wāhkōhtowin model. We discuss the ways in which the model has had to shift to be responsive to: the unique relationships and contexts of different school systems;provincial budget cuts;the opportunity to expand the program into secondary schools;working with/through teacher turnover;the provision of language and cultural activities;land-based programming;professional development sessions;differing comfort levels and knowledge regarding Indigenous history and traditions;and the impact of COVID-19. © Society for the Provision of Education in Rural Education. ABSTRACT

There is a growing concern about Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) in buildings as humans are spending longer in indoor environments, whether this is associated or not with climate change and vulnerability to extreme weather events. In the wake of the COVID pandemic, the need for indoor air quality control is likely to increase, the result of many adaptations in home environments to switch to remote work. In hot countries in the Global South, one of the alternatives is split A/C units with limited air renewal. While, odorless and colorless CO2, commonly generated by occupants through respiration, is among the relevant indoor air pollutants. The purpose of this study is to evaluate a low-cost, responsive air-renewal system in a climate chamber equipped with a standard split A/C unit. The results show the system's feasibility in curbing IAQ concerns and also highlight the risk of negative impacts on indoor thermal conditions and on energy consumption on using A/C. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

This phenomenological qualitative research aimed to examine transformational leadership practices that cultivate an affirmative school culture amid post-traumatic events such as Covid19. The study explored the extent to which crisis management was incorporated within the school safety plan. This research was grounded in two theoretical frameworks, Bridges' (2009) Transition Model and Scharmer's (2017) Theory U, focusing on the social-emotional effects of change throughout the public health crisis. Educational leaders in the Northeastern region of the United States were interviewed. The research gathered the participant's perception of a school's culture and crisis management as a public health crisis disrupted traditional instruction and leadership.The study found that cultivating collaborative relationships rooted in shared vision and trust was fundamental to creating an affirmative school culture. Additionally, the study revealed the significance of creating culturally responsive school safety plans grounded in the historical context of the community's shared lived experiences. Finally, the research highlights how the Covid-19 global pandemic presented an opportunity for educational leaders and stakeholders to develop culturally responsive support systems and structures, which created learning partnerships. ABSTRACT

The achievement gap has a long history in the United States of America which is demonstrated by inequitable graduation rates. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic of 2019, the continued genocide and murder of countless Black and Brown people, civil unrest demonstrated by protests nationally after the execution of George Floyd and countless others, and the continued disparate and inequitable experiences of students, response to the current climate and achievement gap, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) implemented a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policy (NYSED, 2021). The initiative aimed to change the historical narrative and respond to the current climate by creating atmospheres of learning that are both inclusive and culturally pluralistic (NYSED, 2021). The DEI intends to create experiences for students to be inclusive and represent diversity, and the initiative's success will depend on superintendents.This qualitative study explored the actions of 11 K-12 superintendents across New York State, excluding New York City, as they implement culturally responsive pedagogy and practices in their districts. This phenomenological study uses the theoretical framework of culturally proficient leadership presented by Terrell et al. (2018), which encourages leaders to place themselves on a continuum of cultural proficiency and utilize tools to be culturally responsive leaders. The superintendents participated in semi-structured virtual interviews to uncover the characteristics, actions, and impact of developed cultural proficiency on the implementation of culturally responsive practices and pedagogy in their districts. The superintendents selected for the study implemented the culturally responsive practices and pedagogy prior to the May 2021 New York State Education Department's (NYSED) Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Policy release.Through data analysis, findings illustrate the superintendents utilize collaborative processes, quantitative and qualitative data, and student-centered decision-making when implementing culturally responsive practices and pedagogy in their districts. To develop both their own and their districts' cultural proficiency, superintendents engaged in a varied menu of learning opportunities that they engage in individually and with their district teams. They further shared that their learning impacted their practices as superintending. The superintendents also valued the role committees and data played in creating, managing, assessing, and sustaining their initiatives. Recommendations for policy, practice, and further study are also proposed to support the success of the New York State Education Department's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Policy in school districts. ABSTRACT

Refugee families who have children with disabilities encounter numerous systemic barriers that impact their opportunities to partner with schools and special educators. This study explored early childhood special education and elementary special education teachers use of culturally responsive family-professional partnership practices with refugee families and the impact of current events (e.g. political and immigration rhetoric and COVID-19) on special educators' partnerships with refugee families. Fourteen special educators who taught students in early childhood (n = 8) or elementary (n = 6) levels and worked with at least one student whose family was from a refugee background in the past five years completed an online questionnaire. Nine special educators also engaged in semi-structured interviews to obtain input on their experiences supporting refugee families before and during Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings. First, the data highlighted contextual factors, such as teachers' understanding of families' backgrounds, teachers' perceptions of families' experiences in special education, and access to interpreters, that highlighted the need for family-professional partnerships. Second, teachers reported high rates of using family-professional partnership practices with refugee families but reported lower rates of helping refugee families gain skills and information to assist their child in their special education programming. Third, teachers shared strategies that they used before and during IEP meetings to engage and partner with refugee families. Fourth, teachers discussed how changes to immigration laws and rhetoric had minimal impact on their partnerships with refugee families, but there was significant impact on partnerships due to COVID-19. ABSTRACT

Global trends showed that men were somehow, more inclined to the infection and death by Covid-19 than women, which showed no exception in Bangladesh. This paper aims to focus on major socio-economic impacts (economic, education, health, gender power relation) and Covid-19-induced response measures in urban context, through gender lens. Qualitative and quantitative methods were blended for the study. A significant relationship was identified between respondent's gender and maintaining social distancing (χ2 (1, N = 110) = 12.2037, p = 0.000477), also in case of going in crowded places during the first wave of Covid-19 (χ2 (4, N = 110) = 18.8001, p = 0.00086), using chi-square test. Concerned with socio-economic impacts, the gender of respondents was found to have a moderate impact on domestic abuse (χ2 (1, N = 110) = 1.8442, p = 0.174454). As for other impacts, null hypotheses failed to be rejected. Regarding response and awareness level, researcher found that 71.6% of women were more skilled in isolation management, and food stocking, in contrast with 64% of men. Entrenched social prejudices and unequal gender-specific treatments toward women, could stimulate the gender-sensitive disproportion in preparedness, impact, and response phase since the Covid-19 emergence.

ABSTRACT

Drug delivery has made tremendous advances in the last decade. Targeted therapies are increasingly common, with intracellular delivery highly impactful and sought after. Intracellular drug delivery systems have limitations due to imprecise and non-targeted release profiles. One way this can be addressed is through using stimuli-responsive soft nanoparticles, which contain materials with an organic backbone such as lipids and polymers. The choice of biomaterial is essential for soft nanoparticles to be responsive to internal or external stimuli. The nanoparticle must retain its integrity and payload in non-targeted physiological conditions while responding to particular intracellular environments where payload release is desired. Multiple internal and external factors could stimulate the intracellular release of drugs from nanoparticles. Internal stimuli include pH, oxidation, and enzymes, while external stimuli include ultrasound, light, electricity, and magnetic fields. Stimulatory responsive soft nanoparticulate systems specifically utilized to modulate intracellular delivery of drugs are explored in this review.

ABSTRACT

Vaccines are undoubtedly a powerful weapon in our fight against global pandemics, as demonstrated in the recent COVID-19 case, yet they often face significant challenges in reliable cold chain transport. Despite extensive efforts to monitor their time-temperature history, current time-temperature indicators (TTIs) suffer from limited reliability and stability, such as difficulty in avoiding human intervention, inapplicable to subzero temperatures, narrow tracking temperature ranges, or susceptibility to photobleaching. Herein, we develop a class of structural color materials that harnesses dual merits of fluidic nature and structural color, enabling thermal-triggered visible color destruction based on triggering agent-diffusion-induced irreversible disassembly of liquid colloidal photonic crystals for indicating the time-temperature history of the cold chain transport. These self-destructive structural color liquids (SCLs) exhibit inherent irreversibility, superior sensitivity, tunable self-destructive time (minutes to days), and a wide tracking temperature range (-70 to +37 °C). Such self-destructive SCLs can be conveniently packaged into flexible TTIs for monitoring the storage and exposure status of diverse vaccines via naked-eye inspection or mobile phone scanning. By overcoming the shortcomings inherent in conventional TTIs and responsive photonic crystals, these self-destructive SCLs can increase their compatibility with cold chain transport and hold promise for the development and application of the next-generation intelligent TTIs and photonic crystals.

ABSTRACT

A 36-year-old lady presented with fever, cough, maculopapular rash, painless sialadenitis, episcleritis, and arthralgia of more than 10 months, occurring in episodes since she tested positive for COVID-19 in 2020. Her symptoms were well controlled with corticosteroid and immunosuppressant therapy. Her clinical presentation and findings on bronchoscopy resembled that of sarcoidosis. However, the bronchial biopsy histopathology ruled out sarcoidosis. An increased serum immunoglobulin G4 level and its possible association with COVID-19 raises the question of whether the possibility of immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) could be entertained.

Autoimmune peripheral neuropathies (APNs) occur when immunological tolerance to peripheral nerve components (myelin, axon, or ganglionic neurons) is lost. The most common APNs are acute inflammatory polyneuropathies, such as Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN), immunoglobulin M (IgM)–anti–myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) antibody–mediated paraproteinemic neuropathy, and those caused by vasculitis or viral infections. Both cellular and humoral factors, either independently or in concert with each other, appear to play a role, but the specific immune mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. Infectious agents, such as Campylobacter jejuni and Zika virus via molecular mimicry, and now COVID-19, are implicated in some GBS subtypes, but the factors that break tolerance in the other APNs remain unknown. In some acute or chronic APN, antibodies against peripheral nerve glycolipids or glycoproteins are pathogenic and well characterized. Pathogenic IgG4 antibodies against antigens at the nodes of Ranvier that cause disadhesion of nodal and paranodal proteins and conduction block define distinct CIDP subtypes, which respond only to rituximab. Some newly emerging, not pathogenic, autoantibodies more commonly seen in small fiber sensory neuropathies and neuropathic pains are briefly discussed. The tourism industry is facing unexpected economic hardships due to the COVID-19 outbreak, asking for knowledge that would help crisis management create an adequate response. These unprecedented business difficulties increased managers' and policymakers' anxiety and pressured them to undertake actions within the industry with uncertain outcomes. This chapter focuses on building a knowledge base of the tourism and hospitality business by examining managers' perceptions of actions needed to ensure success within conditions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The managers' perceptions of success factors were analyzed by measuring their reactions on several measures related to responsive and nonresponsive management. The sample was comprised of 206 Tourism and Hospitality Management students of the University of Novi Sad (Serbia). The questionnaire was conducted from June to October 2020. The research results indicate a clear orientation towards responsive crisis management. Namely, young managers recommend advanced information management, flexible and innovative chains of command and openness to new ideas in planning, transparency in a new way of doing business with employees and clients, redesigning products and identifying new clients, and formal crisis management planning. Closing the business and waiting for the instruction from the state authorities (a nonresponsive management indicator) is considered a less productive approach to doing business during the crisis. These findings contribute to the development of risk management guidelines for decision-makers involved in the tourism industry operating during and after the COVID-19 outbreak. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThis study aims to use culturally responsive pedagogy as a model to examine teachers' views of the equity implications found within virtual instruction.Design/methodology/approachThe researchers used a descriptive methods design based on survey research employing both fixed (quantitative) and open response (qualitative) options to curate teachers' perceptions of their students' abilities to engage in online learning.FindingsTeachers articulated anxiety for student engagement based on access as well as concerns for student engagement and social emotional learning (SEL) connection. Data point to disparate views of students' abilities to engage in remote learning based on demographic markers. Teachers also noted their own limitations in providing engaging online instruction that was culturally responsive and included social emotional learning (SEL) learning.Originality/valueThis study provided a unique opportunity to explore teachers' perceptions of their students in online learning contexts as well as teachers' perceptions of their own abilities to support diverse students in remote learning. Teachers' responses indicated deficit views of their culturally and linguistically diverse students and signaled awareness of their own limitations in providing online instruction that was culturally responsive and student centered. Study findings point to a need to equip teachers with tools to mitigate systemic inequity in online contexts.

ABSTRACT

Study objective. It has been shown that human common viruses are new target genes for host cell dioxin receptor transcriptional (AhR-ARNT) complex initially proven to up-regulate mammalian genes containing dioxin-response elements (DRE) in the promoters [doi:10.1016/j.ijid.2012.05.265]. Initially, transactivation of HIV-1 and HBV by 2,3,7,8-tetrachlodibenzop- dioxin (TCDD) at low nanomolar range was demonstrated [doi:10.3109/00498259309057034]. Noteworthy, transactivation of human cytomegalovirus (CMV) was shown with 0.3 ppt dioxin, i.e. lower than its current background level in the general population (~3.0 ppt). Recently, reactivation of CMV infection was found to influence worse clinical outcome following SARS-CoV-2 infection (doi: 10.1186/s12979-020- 00185-x). Other findings showed that CMV and herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) reactivation were observed in immunocompetent patients with COVID-19 acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) (doi.org/10.1186/s13054-020-03252-3). Addressing occurrence of Herpesviridae reactivation in severe COVID-19 patients, and still unspecified real triggers of CMV and HSV-1 reactivations, we tested TCDD, which current body burden (DBB) ranges from 20 pg/g (TEQ in fat) in general population to 100 pg/g in older people. Methods. In Silico quantitation of active DRE in promoters of viral genes. Virus DNA hybridization assay. Clinical and epidemiological analyses. Results and Discussion. In this study, a computational search for DRE in CMV and HSV-1 genes was performed by SITECON, a tool recognizing potentially active transcriptional factor binding sites. In silico analysis revealed in regulatory region of CMV IE genes from 5 to 10 DRE, and from 6 to 8 DRE in regulatory region of HSV-1 IE genes.We established that a low picomolar TCDD can trigger up-regulation of CMV and HSV-1 genes via AhR:Arnt transcription factor in macrophage(doi.org/10.1016/ j.ijid.2012.05.265) and glial human cell lines (doi.org/10.1016/j. jalz.2016.06.1268), respectively. In fact, viral reactivation may be triggered in COVID-19 ARDS patients by higher pulmonary TCDD concentrations, because "lipid storm" within lungs of severe COVID-19 patients has been recently reported (doi.org/ 10.1101/2020.12.04.20242115). TCDD is known as the most potent xenobiotic, which bioaccumulates and has estimation half-life in humans of up to 10 yr. Due to hydrophobic character (Log P octanol/water: 7.05), TCDD partitions into inflammatory lipids in lung tissue thus augmenting its local concentration. Population-based epidemiological data on SARS-CoV-2 first wave of pandemic revealed high level of CMV seropositivity and cumulative mortality rate 4.5 times in Lombardi region of Italy, where after Seveso industrial accident TCDD plasma level in pre-exposed subjects is 15 times the level in rest of Italy (doi. org/10.3389/fpubh.2020.620416). Also, Arctic Native (AN) peoples consume dioxin-contaminated fat in seafood and have TCDD DBB, i.e. 7 times that in general population. To the point of this paper, their COVID-19 mortality is 2.2 times of that among non-AN Alaskans (doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm6949a3). Conclusion(s): TCDD in the picomolar range may trigger CMV expression in lung cells and commit virus to the lytic cycle, which can be applied to reactivation of Herpesviridae infection in immunocompetent patients with COVID-19 ARDS syndrome.Copyright © 2023 The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc.

School suspension and expulsion are not limited to middle and high school students;these exclusionary approaches to discipline begin in early childhood settings such as elementary schools. Most studies regarding exclusionary discipline have been conducted on the middle and high school level, but there are very limited studies regarding exclusionary discipline in early childhood or elementary school level. African American elementary school students are disproportionately represented in multiple school suspensions. Although the majority of school suspensions were not due to violent school crimes, but for discretionary offenses, zero tolerance policies have substantially contributed to students being suspended or expelled for trivial infractions. The purpose of this study was to use qualitative research to investigate New York City's public elementary school teachers' perceptions of African American students' behaviors, and how teachers would describe effective behavior intervention approaches for African American students. Data were collected through the use of interviews and journal prompts completed by teachers during the fall of 2021. Results from this study showed that African American students were perceived by the teacher participants as having similar behaviors to other children of various racial and ethnic groups, and needed effective behavior intervention approaches that addressed mental health counseling, extra-curricular and movement activities, preventative measures to discipline, and culturally responsive education. The results obtained from this study may inform educators and policymakers of social justice alternatives to exclusionary discipline. Further studies are needed to examine the "sit still culture" and the role of movement activities and kinesthetic learning modalities as behavioral intervention approaches to lessen disruptive behaviors and curb punitive exclusionary practices, as well as the effects of social justice alternatives to exclusionary discipline as a support system for black students post COVID-19. ABSTRACT

The presence of estrogenic compounds (endocrine-disruptors, EDCs) in the water supply raises concerns about human and aquatic health. Current methods for detecting estrogen contamination require expensive, time-consuming techniques such as liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatography. Previously reported estrogen biosensors required multiple cloning and transformation steps for successful detection in bacteria. Synthetic biology allows for the construction of genetic devises composed of DNA sequences modified to be interchangeable and provide novel functions. New tools and devices are constantly needed to enhance the already extensive list of novel genetic parts. Our approach to the design of an estrogen responsive element uses methodology developed in the Wells lab (Elledge et al, 2021) to detect SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. This methodology takes advantage of the split Nanoluciferase (spLUC) protein divided into two functional domains (designated SmBit and LgBit). Based on rational engineering design we express dimerization dependent LgBit and SmBit fused to the Estrogen Receptor alpha protein (ERalpha) in bacteria cells. These two monomeric proteins will dimerize in the presence of estrogen, reconstitute the split luciferase enzyme and reestablish enzyme activity. Cells can be lysed, and luminescence detected to quantify estrogen present in the sample. We present here the construction strategy and proof of concept data demonstrating the efficiency of this dual-functional biosensor and its effectiveness for detection of estrogenic compounds in contaminated water. ABSTRACT

Increases in adolescent anxiety over the past several years suggest a need for trauma-informed, culturally responsive interventions that help teens cope with environmental stressors like those associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Although abundant evidence supports the efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in treating adolescent anxiety, not all teens respond positively to CBT. CBT does not typically include strategies that address important family factors that may be impacting the teen's functioning, such as the attachment relationship. Attachment-based family therapy (ABFT) addresses the attachment relationship and other factors that contribute to the adolescent's anxiety and related distress. By enhancing positive parenting behaviors, such as acceptance and validation of the adolescent's distress and promotion of their autonomy, ABFT sessions may repair the attachment relationship and increase the family's ability and willingness to engage in CBT tasks aimed at reducing anxiety. This theoretical paper describes the ABFT model and proposes that implementing ABFT sessions prior to CBT could result in better clinical outcomes for adolescents with anxiety disorders by improving the context within which the anxiety symptoms and treatment are experienced. Given that ABFT is sensitive and responsive to family and other contextual factors, adolescents from marginalized communities and those from less individualistic cultures may find the model to be more acceptable and appropriate for addressing factors related to their anxiety. Thus, a combined ABFT+CBT model might result in better outcomes for adolescents who have not historically responded well to CBT alone.

ABSTRACT

Mycoses are infectious diseases caused by fungi, which incidence has increased in recent decades due to the increasing number of immunocompromised patients and improved diagnostic tests. As eukaryotes, fungi share many similarities with human cells, making it difficult to design drugs without side effects. Commercially available drugs act on a limited number of targets and have been reported fungal resistance to commonly used antifungal drugs. Therefore, elucidating the pathogenesis of fungal infections, the fungal strategies to overcome the hostile environment of the host, and the action of antifungal drugs is essential for developing new therapeutic approaches and diagnostic tests. Large-scale transcriptional analyses using microarrays and RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), combined with improvements in molecular biology techniques, have improved the study of fungal pathogenicity. Such techniques have provided insights into the infective process by identifying molecular strategies used by the host and pathogen during the course of human mycoses. This chapter will explore the latest discoveries regarding the transcriptome of major human fungal pathogens. Further we will highlight genes essential for host–pathogen interactions, immune response, invasion, infection, antifungal drug response, and resistance. ABSTRACT

The increase in hostile behavior targeted at Asian people is a concern that school districts must address. To respond well, educators need to apply effective methods for preventing this problem. One of the ways they can achieve this goal is by implementing a culturally responsive approach to teaching. Another involves using effective anti-bullying programs. This paper provides details about the importance of implementing these strategies to prevent anti-Asian attacks. It also provides several examples of anti-Asian incidents that occurred shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic began. A few historical events involving the hostile treatment of Asian people are included to provide a context for understanding this problem.
